5 Proven Strategies for
Better Doubles Play

ā€œOk, Time For Plan Bā€

In doubles pickleball, effective teamwork and strategic positioning are crucial to dominating the court. Playing doubles is not just about individual skills but also about working seamlessly with your partner to control the pace, angles, and flow of the game.

Explore five advanced doubles strategies that can help you gain a tactical edge, along with drills to practice each one. These strategies focus on positioning, pressure, and exploiting weaknesses, allowing you to be more versatile and unpredictable as a team.

 1. Staggered Positioning: Creating Angles and Controlling Space

 Strategy Breakdown

Staggered positioning involves one player standing slightly ahead of the other, rather than side-by-side at the net. One player is positioned closer to the net while the other player stands slightly behind themā€”usually about 2-3 feet back.

 SERVING TIPS TO CREATE POWER!

The focus this week is to encourage players to weaponize their serves, without giving up consistency.

I am offering two good video lessons, from Ed Ju, the Pickleball Journey boys, Callie Smith and Jordan Briones.

Be sure to watch these several times.

Callie Smith: short and sweet, but she demonstrates how you can just use your arm and step in (she shakes her finger, NO), and then compares to a dynamic serve with her hips, shoulders and body creating power!

Ed Ju: 5 tips
Ā· Depth, Height, Power.
Ā· Lob serves are great! Deep with topspin. Low to High.
Ā· Follow-through, noodle arms, if you are going to miss, miss deep. Load your legs, and piston up.
Ā· Feed yourself low, just let go of the ball below your waist.
Ā· Closed versus Open stance: see the video. I like that he suggests a hybrid, between the two. Be conscious of where your toes are pointing.
