Turning a Defensive Baseline Shot into an Offensive Weapon

In pickleball, your baseline shots often play a defensive role, allowing you to reset the point and get back into position. However, a well-timed and disguised baseline drive can turn the tables, catching your opponents off guard and shifting you into an offensive position.

The sneak attack drive is a skillful move where you disguise a baseline drive as a soft return, then accelerate at the last second to surprise your opponents. In this article, we’ll break down the essential steps to mastering the sneak attack drive, covering technique, positioning, and drills to add this clever shot to your game.

What is the Sneak Attack Drive?

The sneak attack drive is a baseline shot where you appear to be setting up for a soft, neutral return, then suddenly accelerate the shot with speed and power.

💪  GETTING TO THE NVZ WITH YOUR
DOUBLES PARTNER

How to get to the NVZ zone (Kitchen) with your doubles partner.

Check out this great video!

· Zane emphasizes that one of the most critical aspects of doubles play is when – and how – players approach the kitchen.

· Getting to the Kitchen consistently is one of the most important ways to score in Pickleball. The serving team is at a huge disadvantage because of the two-bounce rule.

· Should you move together with your partner? Should you rush in? Should you disconnect?

· You do not need to stay tethered to your partner!

· If my partner is going to drop the ball, I am watching whether it is a good third shot. If it is, I am moving in a couple of steps, then moving quickly to the Kitchen. Put pressure on your opponent and look to poach.

· If my partner hits a drop that is attackable, I will stay back to play defense.

· If my partner hits a third shot drive, I have two options. I am either all in, or I am staying back. I will go all the way in, looking to shake and bake. If I am not sure of his drive, I will stay put and play defense.
