Mastering The Flick (Volley Dink)
Flick it Quick
The dink is one of the most common and important shots in pickleball. It is used to control the pace of the game and draw your opponent into the kitchen. However, players can sometimes become too predictable with their dinks, allowing opponents to anticipate their next move.
The flick (volley dink) is an advanced variation of the traditional volley dink, designed to surprise your opponent by adding a sudden burst of speed. This shot turns a soft dink into a fast, offensive move that catches your opponent off guard while keeping the ball low and within the boundaries of the kitchen. In this article, we’ll break down how to execute the flick dink, discuss its strategic advantages, and offer drills to help you add this shot to your game.
What is a Flick Dink?
A flick volley dink is a fast, low shot executed from the kitchen line. The shot starts like a regular dink, with a soft touch, but at the last second, you “flick” the paddle, adding speed and sending the ball quickly to the back of the opponent’s kitchen.

💪 Are Resets The Most Overrated Shots?
Zane Navratil explains in this video how resets, or
softening the ball from a banger, is not always the way to go.
If we do not effectively reset, with a soft absorption that lands with back spin in the Kitchen, then we will continually be attacked.
Your opponent will be able to attack you over and over.
Instead, counter with a punch that lands deep at your opponents’ feet.
I love resets! However, you need more options.
1. Reset if the shot is hard, low, and to your backhand side.
2. Use a topspin roll or a backhand flick if you have time to get low and attack in front of you.
3. Use a counter punch shot (see Zane) if you react quickly enough.
4. What about a Scorpion? Another option for a low ball where you can attack.
See these 3 videos showing the Scorpion!
Why is it called Scorpion? Because when you bend your knees, attack a low ball out in front of you, high to low, you will look like a Scorpion!
