How to Get Through the Transition Zone From the Baseline

I have a new YouTube instructor this week! Adam Richards from High Five Pickleball – thanks Kevin Howell for recommending him! Be sure to watch the video several times.

Adam talks strategy first:

Playing DEFENSE if you do not execute a good 3rd ball drop.

Do not try to attack when you are stuck in the transition zone.

Earn your way to the net.
Patience: It may take a 5th, 9th, or 11th shot to set up your offense.

Don’t rush, slowly close the distance, and wait for that shot that you could attack.

TACTICAL CUES:

Is your shot high or attackable?

Is your opponent moving to attack or hitting down on the ball? e.g. Backswing, overhead, stepping back, etc.

If you do not have a good 3rd shot drop, then stop and split step on your way in and be ready to hit the ball out in front of you.

Reset with a soft volley that will land in their Kitchen. Drop your paddle and get low. Have a wide, stable base.

Grip pressure – 3 to 5 out of 10

Backhand might be better for resets than forehands.

Consider using two hands to soften!

Goal: put your reset in your opponent’s NVZ. Then move to the line.

Be mindful of your footwork as you move from the baseline to the NVZ.
Try not to do a big jump in the air to split step!

Rather, get balanced on the balls of your feet, and turn to the side that your opponent is hitting to you as you split step.

Keep you Paddle up, get to the net, and remember: drill, drill drill!
