Mastering PACING in Pickleball

To Speed Up or Not to Speed Up?

In pickleball, the ability to control the pace of the game is a critical skill that can significantly impact the outcome of a match. While power and precision are often emphasized, pacing—the deliberate manipulation of the speed and rhythm of rallies—can be just as important, if not more so.

What is Pacing in Pickleball?

Pacing refers to the control of the speed and rhythm of play during a pickleball match. It involves varying the tempo of your shots, alternating between fast, aggressive hits and slower, more controlled ones. Effective pacing disrupts your opponent’s timing, keeps them off balance and makes it difficult for them to anticipate your next move and settle into a comfortable rhythm. By changing the pace, you can force errors, create openings, and dictate the flow of the match.

Why Pacing is Important

Pacing is essential because it adds a layer of strategy to your game that can be more effective than relying solely on power or precision. Breaking down the benefits of pacing:

Mass Couple Can't Sell Their Home And Blame Pickleball Noise

What Goes Up….

A Cape Cod couple's struggle to sell their home has sparked controversy, as they point fingers at a nearby pickleball court for the delays. The couple claims the constant sounds of the game are driving away potential buyers, leading them to take legal action against the beloved sport.

But with pickleball’s growing popularity, is the noise really to blame, or is this just another case of pickleball facing unfair scrutiny?

USTA Not Embracing Pickleball

Can’t We All Just Get Along?

As pickleball continues to surge in popularity across the U.S., the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) is grappling with its rapid rise and the impact on tennis. While tennis organizations in some countries embrace pickleball as a complementary sport, the USTA has taken a different stance, focusing on promoting tennis through initiatives like “red ball tennis” rather than engaging with pickleball.

This approach contrasts with the pickleball craze sweeping the nation, raising questions about the future of both sports.

A Snarky Review of Jamie Foxx's
Pickleball Party

Jamie Foxx and Pickleball Parties

Jamie Foxx's pickleball parties have become the stuff of Hollywood legend—or perhaps a surreal fever dream. A recent write-up in The Hollywood Reporter paints a picture of Foxx’s over-the-top gatherings at his Los Angeles estate, where 400 guests indulge in influencer-led cardio classes, a taco truck, and, of course, intense pickleball matches.

The highlight? The absurdly dubbed "Ryan Seacrest of pickleball," a title that leaves you wondering what strange new world you’ve stumbled into.

💪 MASTERING “OUT” BALL LINE CALLS

Mastering “Out” Ball Line Calls

I borrowed this from SuperDUPR Pickleball – be sure to watch it several times!

I love the two ladies screaming at each other and the referee at the beginning of the video. . . unfortunately, this happens too often.

The author incorporates the USA Pickleball Rule book to get the exact definition of an out ball.

He is correct that we rarely have officials anymore for non-pro matches. Therefore, we need to be able to make the correct call on our end of the court.

Official Definition of an Out Ball:

“A ball contacting the playing surface completely outside of the court is “out”. A served ball that lands in the opponent’s non-volley zone, including the NVZ lines, is “out.”

I like that he emphasizes that USA Pickleball states that when you are in doubt, you should give the benefit of the doubt to your opponent.

* “Players shall not call a ball “out” unless they can clearly see a space between the line and the ball as it hits the ground.

The next section shows a ball close to the line and gives you various angles on the court that might change your call depending on where you are.

Great video! Your call will depend on if you can clearly see the space between the ball and the line.

* When do you make the call? All “out” calls must be made prior to the ball being hit by the opponent or before the ball becomes dead. You should wait until the ball bounces, otherwise it is just partner communication, and not an “In” or “Out” call. So, too early or too late is important.

* Use your voice loudly and firmly on your “out” ball calls and use a hand signal if possible.

Remember, when in doubt, call it “IN.” You may lose a few rallies, but you will gain more friends and people who enjoy playing with and against you!!!
