The Importance of Footwork

Put Your Left Foot In, Take Your Left Foot Out…

In pickleball, your footwork and positioning can dictate your success. Efficient movement not only conserves energy but sharpens your tactical play. Mastering the Ready Position and Split Step for agility, ensures that you are always primed to intercept or attack.

Agility enables precise, swift responses, transitioning defense into offense. Focus on drills that enhance speed, coordination, and stamina. Avoid common footwork mistakes by anticipating ball trajectories, optimizing court coverage with the Shuffle Step and the Crossover step.

The basics include the “Ready Position”, “Split Step”, “The Shuffle Step” and “The Crossover.” Each technique serves a tactical purpose;

Learn about each and see great DRILLS to improve your footwork (one you may not have heard of before that was stolen from another sport)…

Trump‘s Pickleball Court
at Irish Golf Resort versus
The Whorl Snail

Whorl Snail says NIMBY

The Narrow-mouthed whorl snail, also known as the Vertigo angustior snail, may be only 2mm in size, but it’s proving a mighty rival to former President Donald Trump. His plans to build out his resort in Clare County Ireland have hit a challenge as a survey is being sought to assess the construction’s impact on the snails. The resort is set to include pickleball courts.

Though small, theses snails play a crucial role in protecting the ecosystem as decomposers. This is not the first time Trump’s plans have been affected by this snail, similar issues arose in this area in 2014 and 2016. Locals seem to be eager for the facility to be built, but the council is seeking this and several other issues to be addressed first.

Picklers Propose Sound-Dampening
Panels to Help Keep the Peace

Braintree Massachusetts is becoming part of the solution when it comes to sound complaints over Pickleball Courts.  The town has set aside over $20,000 to purchase sound-deafening panels the Pickleball group suggested.

Over 600 members strong, the group is taking the initiative in peaceful co-existence with their neighbors. One of the original picklers in the group, Janice Barris, said, “We’re trying to be proactive addressing the situation once we became aware of it.”

Sound Seal, the manufacturer of the panels claims they reduce noise by 10-12 decibels. Read more about their innovative plan here…

Super Senior: 80 Year Old is
Billings Pickleball Evangelist

Q2 News (modified)

Larry Seekins learned about pickleball from a clinic his wife saw advertised just a block from his house. He became more dedicated to pickleball after having heart surgery while working in Washington for the U.S. Forestry Service.

He noted, “I found that if I played pickleball three times a week, I maintained perfectly. And that was 35 years ago. And look at me now.” He is a true evangelist for the sport even now at 80 years old, playing nearly every weekday.

He’s taught over 3,000 students, including six who went on to become national champions.

  💪 WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

PICKLEBALL VOCABULARY:
WHAT THE HECK IS A NASTY NELSON?

So many Pickleball terms, and so little time!
Most of us know the basics:

NVZ or No Volley Zone which is another way of referring to the Kitchen
“Ace” which means a serve that is un-returnable, just like in tennis
Dink a softly hit ball that lands in the kitchen to set up an attack
Third Shot Drop which means it lands softly in your opponent’s kitchen
Drive means a shot hit with power, hoping your opponent will pop it up.

How about some of the other less familiar terms?

1. ATP: Around the Net Post. Player lets an angled ball drop down low, and waits, then hits around the net post into the opponent’s court.

2. Erne: A player jumps across the kitchen line to the sideline, and attacks the ball with a surprise volley.

3. Bert: Same as an Erne but happens when you poach and execute the Erne from your partner’s side of the court.

4. Shake and Bake: You drive the serve at the player who is coming in. Your partner prepares to poach and attack the (hopefully) weak return or pop up.

5. Nasty Nelson: The server intentionally aims the serve at the partner of the returning player. If it hits them, it is the serving team’s point.

6. Tomahawk: Taking a ball that is high on your backhand side, and turning your paddle so that you can attack with a forehand. Drop down low with your body, and attack with a forehand on your backhand side.

7. Scorpion: Drop down low, and attack a lower, slower ball out in front, with your body bent forward. Follow-through!

8. Pickled or Bageled: Your team did not score any points in the game.

9. OPA: The third shot has been executed, and play is on!

10. Falafael: A shot that is so weak it does not travel over the net.
