🗞️NEWS

Pickleball & Special Olympics
in New Jersey

Special Olympics New Jersey is hopeful that Pickleball will be included as an official sport in two years, but in the meantime, volunteers at the Deptford Pickleball Club in South are introducing athletes to the fastest growing sport in the USA.

One volunteer, Florence Demark said, “It has been very rewarding, we have parents come from a great distance and they say there is nothing like this available in their area. When they tell us that, we know it is a good thing.”

One of the atheletes, who has competed in the Special Olympics since he was a pre-teen, says about the training, “I feel powerful and great, I love them and they are great instructors."

💰 FINANCIAL NEWS

Is Pickleball Still an Affordable Sport?

Still a Bargain?

One of the great draws of Pickleball, besides being easy to learn and popular among all age groups, is the affordability of the sport. There are free public courts and starter paddles can be purchased for under $30.

But with the unprecedented growth, has that changed? The answer is: It depends.

While some gear has actually seen a drop in price points, high end paddles can sell for over $500.

🗞️ HEALTH NEWS

Playing Pickleball
With a Heart Condition

\

While pickleball is not as demanding a cardio workout as some other more intense sports, it still demands quick bursts of energy and sustained movement.

Many people are aware of the health benefits of cardio workouts, but what about people with existing heart conditions? Is pickleball right for them?

According to Dr. Lili Barouch, director of sports cardiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, pickleball can help people with heart conditions and help prevent heart conditions in healthier players. But there are some caveats.

The Taylor Swift Effect

When two worlds collide

From a Pub in London to a Pickleball Fashion Brand, the “Taylor Swift Effect” is skyrocketing sales. It took one short video from Taylor of her playing pickleball for the fashion brand Popflex to “Swiftly” sell out of their lilac colored lavender skirt.

The pub was mentioned in Swift’s song, “The Black Dog,” but it took a keen-eyed blogger to identify the outfit worn by Taylor Swift in the pickleball video as the Popflex brand!

Needless to say, sales exploded. It’s an interesting phenomena to witness what happens when the hottest pop star in the world meets the hottest sport of the last 5 years!

  💪 THE SHIN SHOT

The Shin Shot Attack

Make your attacks harder to defend with a Shin Shot.

Ed Ju demonstrates how he initially attacks his opponent, Nick, by hitting down, at his feet. Study this video carefully.

What he realized, is that this attack helps your opponent to defend, since the ball bounces in front of them and they have time to soften, block, and reset the drive.

Ed has an epiphany – attack higher, at your opponent’s shins, so they must take the ball out of the air. This is harder for them to soften and reset, and they may pop it up, so you can attack.

Practice this with a partner, and switch roles after you get some good repetitions.

Thanks Ed! Great video!
