Volley Like a Pickleball Player, Not a Tennis Player
I have noticed during my drill classes recently, that players are not putting away attackable balls. They block, dink or reset, but they do not attack!
Basic strategies for all levels:
· Serve deep
· Return deep and get to the NVZ (Kitchen)
· Serving team executes a third shot drop, third shot drive, third shot lob, or third shot hybrid
· All four players are at the net, dinking until they get a ball that they can speed up or attack.
In my observations, very few beginner to advanced-beginner players get to the NVZ and start dinking. They do not return deep enough to get to the line, or they get attacked on the way in. You need to be able to attack any weak shots, so get up to the line and get ready to put the ball down and deep at their feet.
Here are some suggestions:
1. If you cannot get through the transition zone before your opponent contacts the ball, be sure to split step and get balanced with your paddle out in front of you. Volley it deep, and then get all the way to the line.
2. Be balanced and ready! If they give you an attackable ball, use your hips and shoulders, short backswing, and punch, snap, drive your forehand or backhand volley deep and to your opponent’s feet. Think about a dart throw! Use your off hand to get your shoulders involved, so that you can generate power without a foot fault.
3. If the ball is not high, you can still attack if you use topspin. Drop your paddle down, (6 o’clock) and go low to high because you are close to the net. Roll the ball, use your shoulders and your off arm to generate power.
4. You really need to drill and practice this to gain confidence and be more competitive. Check out the attached videos above, which cover:
· Wall drills
· Partner drills and progressions
· Advanced volley drills, with various positions, movements, and sometimes in the Kitchen.
· Topspin roll volley if the ball is low.
· Backhand punch volley, using your shoulders and hips to attack.
Hint: When you watch pro matches, or advanced drill videos, be sure to watch the players’ body, hips, shoulders, positioning, follow-through. Do not just watch the ball! Watch their split step, their backswing, their ready position, their follow-through.
You need to be comfortable at the net. Keep a soft grip, keep your paddle in front, keep your knees soft, stance balanced, and incorporate your hips and shoulders!
