5 Serve Variations to Keep
Your Opponents Guessing

Serving Up Variations

In pickleball, the serve is often underestimated. For many, it’s simply a way to start the point. But if you see your serve as an opportunity to gain an early advantage, you’ll understand how important it is to add variety to your serve game. A predictable serve allows your opponent to prepare for a strong return, but mixing up your serves forces them to adjust constantly, disrupting their rhythm and increasing the chances of errors.

In this guide, we’ll cover five effective serve variations for all skill levels, along with tips and drills to help you master each one. With practice, these serves can transform your game and keep your opponents guessing.

  1. The Short, Low Serve
The short, low serve is an excellent tool to keep your opponent off balance. By landing the ball just beyond the kitchen line, you force your opponent to move forward and return from an awkward position. This serve disrupts players who are more comfortable returning from the baseline.

Paddle Position

Check out Zane Navratil with this great video on paddle position!

Zane demonstrates a second video on shortening your backswing, so that you can create more topspin, more power, and more control.

Be sure to watch the videos more than one time.

Major points:

· Keep your paddle neutral and be ready for both the backhand and forehand side to reset or defend.

· Keep your paddle grip soft and be able to go to the Backhand or Forehand side to react to your opponents’ attack.

· On the backswing, be sure to shorten your backswing! Pickleball requires more follow-through!
